Rotterdam – Stichting Aquarius is calling on residents to help save the Rotterdam Swim, the oldest city swim in Europe. Each year, participants swim 3 km around the Noordereiland to raise money for charity. Since swimmers were not allowed to hold the 15‑year anniversary edition during daytime, Rotterdam Festivals has issued a ban on the event every year.

Objections Committee Offers Little Chance of Success
Aquarius files an objection annually after receiving the rejection — typically around Christmas — but after winning its first case, the independent objections committee has dismissed the event every year on the grounds that no “new arguments” can be presented.
According to Aquarius, the committee process is structurally unworkable: cases are handled so late, often in May or June, that even a successful ruling leaves too little time to organize the Rotterdam Swim. As a result, the foundation argues that the municipal system leaves organizers with virtually no chance of success.
Approved by All Services Except Rotterdam Festivals
All relevant services have given their approval for the event, including the police, fire brigade, GGD, and the harbour master. Only Rotterdam Festivals continues to block the permit. During the most recent objection hearing, this was explicitly confirmed and recorded in writing. Municipal lawyers maintain that the responsibility for the recurring ban since 2022 lies with the organizers.
Project ONE
Aquarius has launched Project ONE, named in tribute to Eric Schunselaar, who coined the term ONE (O for Rondje, N for Noorder, E for Eiland) 19 years ago. The initiative aims to safeguard the 3 km city swim around the Noordereiland and preserve its long tradition. More information is available at www.rotterdamswim.com/project-one.
How to Participate
Residents who wish to support Project ONE and help restore the Rotterdam Swim are invited to attend a meeting on 17 June at 19:00 at Huis van de Wijk – Aan de Kade, Prins Hendrikkade 89, where Erik van Loon will welcome attendees.
